Financial Development and Credit Management Research Center

Basic Situation

In February 2006, the relevant departments of the Hunan Provincial People's Government, several central units in Hunan, and the Hunan University jointly established an interdisciplinary research institution - Hunan University Credit Research Base (referred to as the "base"). In 2007, the base was approved by the Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee as the "Hunan Research Base for Philosophy and Social Sciences". In 2009, the base was listed as a core component of Hunan's social credit system construction. In 2012, the base was awarded the title of "Advanced Unit for Social Credit System Construction in Hunan Province". In 2016, with the approval of the Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, the base was renamed as "Financial Development and Credit Management Research Center of Hunan University" (referred to as the "center"). In 2016, the center was among the first batch of source think tanks of the Chinese Think Tank Index (CTTI). In 2018, approved by the Publicity Department of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, the center was included in the first batch of specialized characteristic think tanks of Hunan Province. Currently, Professor Yang Shenggang serves as the director and the chief expert of the center.

Relying on the interdisciplinary research advantages of Hunan University, the center is committed to building itself into a new-type think tank, a talent pool, and a research platform. It strives to embody the traits of openness, possessing capable personnel, fostering internal and external coordination, embracing competition and innovation, and facilitating seamless integration among government, industry, academia, and research. It strives to become China's top professional research institution with international influence.

The center is equipped with 16 full-time researchers and 10 part-time ones. It is entitled to grant doctoral degrees in two first-level disciplines: Management (Financial Risk Management) and Applied Economics (Finance). Since its inception, the center has admitted more than 150 postgraduates, 32 doctoral students, and 7 postdocs. So far, the center has witnessed the successful graduation of 136 postgraduates and 18 doctoral students, along with the completion of 4 postdoctoral fellowships.

In recent years, the members of the center have successively led more than 50 national major research projects, including major key projects and innovative groups funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and major key projects by the National Social Science Fund of China. They won more than 20 scientific and technological awards such as the first prize of Hunan Scientific and Technological Progress Award and the first Prize of Hunan Excellent Achievement Award in Social Sciences. They have published more than 250 papers in mainstream academic journals such as the International Review of Economics and Finance, Social Sciences in China, the Economic Research Journal, the Journal of Management World, and the Journal of Management Sciences in China. Furthermore, they have obtained 16 invention patents and software copyrights in the field of credit management.

Organizational Structure

Plans

In accordance with the unified deployment of the Business School and the needs for discipline development, efforts will be made to develop the center into a high-level interdisciplinary academic institution that integrates personnel training, scientific research, consultation, and international exchange activities.

Specific work plans include:

1. Admitting postgraduates and doctoral students, and fostering excellent graduate students with the joint efforts of the tutor team;

2. Introducing a team of scholars and experts with international influence, and recruiting outstanding talents at home and abroad;

3. Building teams of postdoctoral researchers, teaching assistants, and research assistants;

4. Further specifying the research direction, and conducting scientific research in the domain of financial reform and development and risk management;

5. Providing advisory and consulting services to the government, and building high-level think tanks in humanities and social sciences;

6. Organizing academic exchanges and seminars and engaging in international exchanges and cooperation; and,

7. Cooperating with world-renowned universities and research institutions and the industrial circle to facilitate the commercialization of scientific research achievements.

Expected results include:

1. With the center's members as the first corresponding author or first author, three papers are expected to be published in economics, management, accounting, finance, marketing, and operations management periodicals of the journal evaluation system issued by the Association of Business Schools (ABS), or in B1-class journals of the Business School. At least one of the above papers should be included in the FT or UTD database.

2. Every year, the center is expected to jointly hold 2-3 international academic conferences and invite internationally renowned financial management scholars to the Business School to give 2-3 academic lectures.
